What Is Meditation?
In the modern era meditation is a word that is used so loosely causing a lot of confusion around the practice. Meditation may mean sitting in silence for one person or to another it may mean to control your breath. According to Yoga International meditation is a precise technique for resting the mind and attaining a state of consciousness that is totally different from the normal waking state. It is the means for fathoming all the levels of ourselves and finally experiencing the center of consciousness within.
Some may meditate for 10 minutes, 30 minutes or even an hour, there is no correct time period. This is dependant on you and what works best with your lifestyle and daily routine. There are a variety of reasons to begin the practice the most common benefits can be found below.
- Controls anxiety
- Enhances self-awareness
- Strengthens emotional health
- Generates positivity
- Reduces stress
Now you may still be questioning yourself, where do I start? What do I do? Here is a simple five-minute meditation routine that is great for beginners and something you can do before heading out to work.

Five Minute Meditation Routine
Do the following for one minute:
- Inhale for five seconds
- Hold your breath for five seconds
- Inhale and hold it up again for five seconds
- Repeat the same for another minute
Next, find the right posture:
- If you are in a chair sit up straight and close your eyes
- If you feel more comfortable on the floor sit cross-legged and close your eyes

Repeat Step One:
For the next 2-3 minutes repeat step one in your preferred position with your eyes closed.
Congratulations! You have completed your first five-minute practice and are one step closer to reducing stress, controlling anxiety and enhancing your self-awareness. You can do this on a daily basis or a couple of times a week it’s up to you. Whatever you choose to make it consistent on a weekly basis.
